The Former Opera House, Newark, DE, 1999

THE FORMER OPERA HOUSE

Located at the corner of Main and Academy Streets,this building was built in 1885 and was operated as an opera house until 1903. Since then it has undergone numerous changes, and housed numerous facilities, notably among which a silent movie theater, a Masonic Hall, a post office, and a bank. Today, the building still houses various businesses, but these are mainly luxary apartments, offices, and a variety store. The building sustained a major fire in 1983 which destroyed mainly the upper floors. But, it was restored shortly thereafter.
