ARTIST'S PROFILE

Lyndon O. Barton, Senior Engineer (retired) with E. I. DuPont Company and resident of Newark, Delaware, was born in Buxton, Guyana, where he pursued art both as a hobby and, as an independent student, gained the General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) in Art from the University of London.  He also received numerous awards and prizes for his work in Guyana before migrating to the United States to pursue a career in engineering.   Continuing with art as a hobby, while a professional engineer, he was recognized, in 1985, by the Committee for Improvement of Buxton (CIMBUX), a U.S. based Guyanese organization, for his Art contribution to Buxton, his hometown.

Although Mr Barton has worked with various media, his most recent renderings have been in pencil.  These include LANDMARKS OF BUXTON, Guyana, LANDMARKS OF NEWARK, Delaware, and scenes from A STUDY HALL based on his observations as a part-time high school teacher.  These works were presented in separate one-man exhibitions held at various locations in Delaware, including   the Wilmington Public Library, the Newark Municipal Building, and the Newark Senior Center, for which he received favorable reviews. As stated elsewhere in this gallery (See ABOUT BUXTON), Mr Barton's inspiration for the Landmark Series echoes back to his experience growing up in Buxton, where one of his favorite pastimes was to go around the village and draw landscapes (including certain landmarks) as one of his art projects. He did this without realizing how important these landmarks would be in later years. Then, upon returning to Guyana, after several years of absence, and finding that many of the once familiar landmarks of his hometown no longer existed or were on the verge of extinction, he came to realize the historical importance of his earlier drawings, and decided to continue the effort he started as a youth. "The Buxton Railway Station"), was a classic example of one of the nonexistent landmarks. Not much later, he also decided to broaden that effort to include Newark, his current residence.

In addition to teaching at the high school level, Mr Barton has taught at the college level courses in math and engineering.  He is also the author of "Mechanism Analysis (1st and 2nd editions)," a textbook published by Marcel Dekker for mechanical engineers, and is listed in the 1994/95 Marquis Publication of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
